About Lisbon by Rail
Why this site exists
Lisbon by Rail started in 2026 as an editorial project with one goal: build the resource we wish we had on our first trip to Lisbon. Existing English-language guides to the city’s public transport were either officially produced (and written like government leaflets) or scattered across travel blogs that mixed accurate information with outdated tips, broken links and recommendations driven entirely by affiliate commissions.
We thought there was room for something different — a focused, regularly updated resource on one topic, written by people who actually care whether the prices, schedules and routes are right.
How we work
Every guide on Lisbon by Rail is researched against four official sources:
- Metropolitano de Lisboa for metro fares, schedules and accessibility
- Carris for trams, buses, funiculars and the Santa Justa lift
- Comboios de Portugal (CP) for suburban trains to Sintra and Cascais
- Lisbon Airport authority (ANA Aeroportos) for airport transport options
Beyond official sources, we cross-check every piece of practical advice — pickpocket reports, queue patterns, neighbourhood transport tips — against multiple independent travel forums and Portuguese press coverage. When the official information contradicts what visitors actually experience on the ground, we say so.
Every fare and schedule has a “last verified” date in the article. Whenever a Portuguese transport operator announces a fare change — usually in January — we revisit and update the affected guides within two weeks.
Editorial independence
Lisbon by Rail does not publish sponsored content. We are not paid by transport operators, hotels, tour companies or tourism boards to recommend their services.
We do participate in affiliate programmes — including GetYourGuide, Booking.com, Welcome Pickups, and Amazon Associates — which means we may earn a small commission when a reader clicks a link and makes a purchase. These commissions help cover our hosting, research and update work. They never influence what we recommend. If a tour is overpriced or an airport transfer service has bad reviews, we say so, even when there is a commission available for the link.

Who is behind the site
Lisbon by Rail is run by a small editorial team based in Europe. We choose to publish under the editorial brand rather than individual bylines because the work — researching, fact-checking, updating — is collective and impersonal. There is no single “Lisbon expert” behind every article; there is a system for keeping the information accurate, and that is the part we want to be transparent about.
